“Heaven and Earth Meet” 2024
A couple of weeks ago (more like a month ago), I painted a piece to be entered
into the Eucharistic Revival Art Competition. The prompt was simple. It had to be something Biblical, Saint-related, or Eucharistic. In general, Catholic-themed. I decided to go the Eucharistic route. This was really the first time I had done a Catholic piece of art for the public eye. In the past, I have done little paintings of things like the Sacred Heart, crosses, etc., but I had never done a painting like this before.
The premise of the whole painting that it is the moment of Transubstantiation, the moment where Heaven and Earth meet and the substance of the bread and wine changes into the Body and Blood of Christ. It is arguably the most formidable moment of Mass. It is the point at which prayers are the most powerful.
As part of the overall composition, I went with a moody and warm color palette. I wanted there to be a mixture of Baroque and Chiaroscuro feeling to the piece. While my painting is not necessarily Baroque style or colored like a Chiaroscuro painting, my painting nods to the two.
My painting was not chosen for the Eucharistic Revival Art Competition and that is completely fine. When entering an art competition, there is always a 50/50 chance that you will or won’t get into the competition. What’s important is continuing to apply to galleries and competitions!
Until next time,
